Exploring a festival illustration concept featuring a lively beach scene, illustrated characters, and logo design inspired by a previous Fatboy Slim brief
Exploring a festival illustration concept featuring a lively beach scene, illustrated characters, and logo design inspired by a previous Fatboy Slim brief
Introduction
This project began as a personal exploration inspired by helping Guy with illustrations for Skepta and his festival Big Smoke. I wanted to revisit a concept I had developed for a previous brief, one that ultimately went in a different direction, but felt it was worth exploring further. It was also a great opportunity to challenge myself and improve my design skills.
The Brief
The original brief tasked me with developing potential theme ideas for a festival hosted by Fatboy Slim at Butlins. The core goals were to convey fun, energy, and a vibe that reflected Norman’s personality. The festival’s working title was House of Love, a playful nod to the afterparties Fatboy Slim famously hosted at his home in Brighton.
The Process
My concept centered around a beach setting with a sandcastle representing the House of Love. This approach captured a rave-like energy, with people dancing inside the castle and others enjoying the surrounding beach, tying the illustration to the Butlins venue.
When developing the poster, I began by building the sandcastle and overall scenery before designing each character individually. I also created a custom wordmark logo that reflected the poster’s energy, unifying the visual identity and bringing the concept to life.
Overall, this project was a fun and rewarding challenge that allowed me to explore a playful concept while honing my illustration and design skills. It reminded me how exciting it is to bring an idea to life, from concept to final visual.
